Monday, 4. July 2011
Largest Gothic cathedral in France, Notre Dame d’Amiens is often considered as one of the masterpieces of medieval architecture. This is one of the l argest Gothic churches of the thirteenth century.
The Gothic cathedral of Amiens, massive and breathtaking, is approximately 112 meters above the ground. It has a total length of 145 meters for an internal volume of about 200,000 cubic meters. The area of the church, meanwhile, is 770 square meters. The height of the nave vault is 43 meters. It is built on a Latin cross-shaped, with a nave with aisles, a transept aisles and a choir that includes five vessels.
The three portals of Amiens Cathedral are named (from left to right) of St. Firmin, Beau God and Mother God. They are decorated with numerous sculptures, including saints and apostles.
Color marks on the Amiens Cathedral were revealed during the restoration of the portals, few years ago. Studies have shown that the polychrome was unexpected magnitude, in very bright colors.
For several years, the cathedral of Amiens got its old colors back again during the summer evenings, in a beautiful light show. Thanks to an ingenious process consisting of the projection of light through a translucent screen, the original colors of the statues have been reproduced. A real “Sound and Light“show is available on the forecourt of the Cathedral of Amiens.
